**JAFFNA, Sri Lanka, Oct. 19 —** Officers from Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted an extensive search of the Jaffna office of former cabinet minister and Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader Douglas Devananda on Monday, spending several hours examining the building and its surrounding premises.

The search took place at No. 273, Stanley Road, Jaffna, where Mr. Devananda maintains his political office.

According to CID officers, investigators obtained a search warrant from the Jaffna court after receiving information that prompted the operation. The officers did not disclose the nature of that information or specify what they were seeking.

Investigators carried out a thorough examination of the office building and the surrounding compound. The operation continued for several hours.

At the conclusion of the search, CID officers recorded a statement from the official responsible for administering the party office. Mr. Devananda, the EPDP’s secretary-general, was present when the statement was taken.

It was not immediately clear whether investigators had seized any documents or other materials during the operation. The authorities had not publicly announced any findings from the search.

Mr. Devananda, a veteran Tamil politician who represented Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s Parliament for nearly three decades, has served in several cabinet positions under successive governments. He most recently held the fisheries portfolio until 2024.

The EPDP is an established Tamil political party based in northern Sri Lanka, with Mr. Devananda serving as its longtime leader.

As of Monday, the CID had not publicly explained the purpose of the search or announced any charges arising from the operation.
