**COLOMBO, Sri Lanka —** A medical board has determined that Maj. Gen. Suresh Salley, the former head of Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence Service, is fit to be discharged from the National Hospital in Colombo, the attorney general’s office told a magistrate on Tuesday.

Mr. Salley, who has been hospitalized for nearly four months while being held under a detention order, is expected to be returned to the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department after his discharge, the Fort Magistrate’s Court was told.

The disclosure came when the case was taken up before Magistrate Pasan Amarasena.

Mr. Salley, a retired major general who previously served as director of the State Intelligence Service, was arrested on Feb. 25 and placed under a 90-day detention order as investigators questioned him in connection with an ongoing inquiry.

He was admitted to the National Hospital on June 7 after developing health complications and has remained there since.

Investigators had previously told the court that his prolonged hospitalization was hampering the inquiry, including their ability to question him and record statements.

A further 90-day detention order was issued on Aug. 25 to allow investigators to continue the inquiry.

The attorney general’s office told the court on Tuesday that, following an assessment by a medical board, Mr. Salley’s condition no longer required continued hospitalization and that he could be discharged.

He is expected to be transferred back to CID custody later Tuesday.
