**JAFFNA, Sri Lanka —** A senior surgeon at the University of Jaffna has given tree-planting machinery and protective gear to the Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha. The local council has been planting trees in its area under a campaign it calls “Green Nallur.”

Prof. Balasingam Balagobi heads the University Surgical Unit at Teaching Hospital Jaffna. He handed over earth augers, the machines used to drill planting holes, along with other tools and protective clothing for the council workers who do the planting. Mayooran, the council’s chairman, received the equipment for the Pradeshiya Sabha.

The donation is meant to make the work faster and easier on the crews and to help the council take the campaign further.

The council has already planted trees along Brown Road and Potpathy Road, two of the main roads in its area, and at other sites it administers. Green Nallur is part of the council’s wider effort to add tree cover across the division.

Dr. Balagobi is a professor of urology at the university’s Faculty of Medicine and a consultant urological surgeon. He received his medical degree, an MBBS, from the University of Colombo in 2008\. In 2015, he completed an MD in surgery at the university’s Postgraduate Institute of Medicine. That same year he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was awarded a fellowship in urology by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2019 and a fellowship in urology by the International College of Surgeons in 2023\. Outside urology, his listed research interests include cancer prevention, water safety, student well-being and planetary health, and the study of how environmental change affects human health. In 2010, he was named one of Sri Lanka's Ten Outstanding Young Persons.

He is also vice president of IMPACT, short for Interdisciplinary Multifaceted Professionals for Active Community Transformation. It is a Jaffna-based think tank of professionals from several fields that runs community projects in the city.
