COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, arrived in Colombo on Wednesday for a one-day official visit, as New Delhi and Colombo seek to sustain momentum in their expanding bilateral relationship following a series of high-level engagements in recent months.
Mr. Misri, a career diplomat who heads India's foreign service and previously served as ambassador to China, Spain, and Myanmar, is scheduled to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, according to the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
The visit follows a period of intensified engagement between the two countries and is expected to focus on the implementation of agreements reached during recent leadership-level meetings, as well as cooperation in connectivity, energy, trade, investment, maritime security, and development assistance.
Officials said the discussions would review the progress of ongoing bilateral initiatives and explore ways to further strengthen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
India has emerged as Sri Lanka's closest regional partner in recent years, providing billions of dollars in financial assistance during the island nation's 2022 economic crisis and continuing to support major infrastructure, energy, and development projects. New Delhi has also sought to deepen strategic cooperation with Colombo as the Indian Ocean assumes growing geopolitical significance.
Mr. Misri, who assumed office as India's Foreign Secretary in July 2024, is one of New Delhi's most experienced diplomats. Before taking over the ministry's top bureaucratic post, he served as Deputy National Security Adviser and was also Private Secretary to three Indian Prime Ministers.
