Jaffna MP Archchuna  Accuses Fisheries Minister of Corruption, Demands Resignation if Proven

Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna has leveled serious corruption allegations against Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar in Parliament, demanding his resignation if the charges are proven.

Speaking during a recent parliamentary session, Archchuna accused the minister of failing to take action against illegal fishing practices and overseeing widespread corruption within the fisheries sector.

Allegations of Inaction on Illegal Fishing

The controversial MP questioned what concrete measures Chandrasekar had implemented since taking office to combat banned fishing methods, specifically karai valai (shore-seine net) and surukku valai (purse-seine net) fishing.

"Despite repeated complaints from the public, the minister has taken no action. Communities say their grievances about illegal fishing have been ignored since he took office," Archchuna charged during his parliamentary intervention.

Corruption Claims in Sea Cucumber Farming

Archchuna also highlighted alleged corruption within the sea cucumber farming sector, claiming that public complaints about malpractices have gone unaddressed.

"People complain of rampant corruption in sea-cucumber farming, yet nothing has been done," the MP stated.

In a direct challenge to the minister, Archchuna alleged that bribes were being accepted through Chandrasekar's proxies. "If I table evidence in Parliament, will you act? And if corruption is proved, are you ready to resign?" he demanded.

The Jaffna MP further pressed for transparency regarding personnel transfers within the Northern Province Fisheries Department following Chandrasekar's appointment as minister.

"The people deserve transparency on these changes," Archchuna insisted, suggesting that the transfers may have been politically motivated.

Minister Seeks Time to Respond

In response to the allegations, Minister Chandrasekar requested a two-week period to formulate his reply to the charges.

The exchange has intensified scrutiny of the Fisheries Ministry’s handling of illegal fishing and regulatory enforcement in the Northern Province. While MP Arjunan himself is a contentious figure, many fishing communities in Jaffna continue to voice frustration that their longstanding grievances are being ignored.

‘I’d Rather Die’: Ex-Spy Chief Refuses to End Hunger Strike or Return to CID Cell

By M.R. Narayan Swamy Sri Lanka’s former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, detailed for alleged links with Islamists who unleashed the Easter bombings in 2019, refuses to give up his indefinite hunger strike or return to CID custody, which he dubs a “hellhole”. Sallay made this clear to his lawyer, who called on him at the National Hospital in Colombo, where he was admitted on June 7, two days after he launched a fast in protest against his degrading treatment, his wife Manori said on Tuesday.

One Country, Different Rules: A Family Card Required Only in Sri Lanka’s North.

MULLAITIVU, Sri Lanka — For many families across Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, a document known as the 'Family Card' plays a central role in their dealings with the state. Residents say it is routinely required to collect Samurdhi welfare benefits, apply for housing under government schemes, and obtain certificates from village officers. In practice, they say, the card must be carried much like a national identity card. Yet the document is largely unknown outside the former war zone. According

Why Only Easter? Why Not Mullivaikkal?

By Kumulan Sri Lanka is suddenly brave. The state has found courage. It has found investigators, files, witnesses, travel bans, detention orders, and dramatic whispers about former presidents and former spy chiefs. It now speaks of the Easter Sunday bombings as though justice has finally entered Colombo, barefoot and late, carrying a torch. Good. Let every room be opened. Let every liar sweat. Let every priest, widow, parent, orphan, and survivor hear the truth. If senior officials enabled,

Defenders of Bharatanatyam Record Say Costs Were Disclosed and Agreed in Writing

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — The organizers of a Bharatanatyam performance that set a Guinness World Record in the Sri Lankan capital recently have found defenders among people familiar with how the event was arranged, who say that the costs borne by participants and the process for obtaining official certificates were spelled out well in advance and accepted in writing. The pushback follows criticism from social activist Rajkumar Rajeevkanth, as well as several parents and activists, who argued in a s
